If you have a simple UPS at home that is not using any smart signaling.
It would be really nice to have some kind of "Universal" UPS device support to initiate a controlled shutdown of the NAS...

What?

Well why don't add support to the next firmware so that you can make usage of UPS's that have non-signaling built in to it!

How?

Simply by adding an option to monitor the network linkstatus or a specific IP-Address
at a regular interval. (30-60 seconds).

If the network link or a specific IP-Address is down for more than 2minutes
(or a custom time) do perform a controlled system shutdown/hibernation.

Benefits!

Simple Universal UPS support.
You can use cheap non signaling UPS's.
You will free up an USB port for other usage on the NAS unit.

Still, don't forget to enhance the eSATA and USB disk/storage device support to the unit!

- Remote access, formatting/initializing, volume and access handling.
- Local filecopy between volumes/shares and externally attached devices.
- Selective mirroring between internal and externally attached devices.
- Batch copying/mirroring to/from ftp sites/SAMBA shares using UNC paths or similar.
- Oneway replication to or from the volumes/shares to multiple devices (NAS/Servers)
- Backup of internal disk volume data to an external eSATA or USB disk.
- Sheduling of above tasks.

Mobile device (iPhone/iPad) support for uploading files or mailing files/fotos and attachments to the nas remotely. A mail function downloading attachments from a pop3 mailbox account at a scheduled interval, deleting and removing the mail from the inbox after the file was written successfully to the NAS volume/share of your choice.

Finally an admin password recovery/reset utility without loosing the storage data if possible.
